Beyond the exciting concept of playing the albums start to back the music is simply awesome. They are hot and tight from the start, and when Weir joins for Cream Puff Warit goes up to a new level. Highlights include Sitting on top of the World, Cream Puff War, and just about all of Anthem. In particular the transition from Alligator into Caution is just smokin', and listen to the Jackie rap in the middle in order to be treated to some sweet licks by Bobby and MONSTER Phil bombs. It was rocking but I was thinking to myself "what are they going to play? Truckin', U.S. Blues?" Finally, I think it was Jackie, sang The Golden Road To Unlimited Devotion. The opening track that started it all for The Grateful Dead way back in 1967. After 14 minutes I thought to myself, "well, maybe they'll play Beat It On Down The Line". Ka ching! Then I said "well, they'll probably skip the Pig Pen songs. Nope! They played a rocking Good Morning Little Schoolgirl. The 12 minute Cold Rain And Snow was a nice touch. I enjoyed the fiddle on Sitting On Top Of The World. We all went ecstatic when Bobby stepped out for Cream Puff War but my only criticism was the go go dancers. Go-Go dancing was part of the mainstream in the mid sixties and the Dead were anything but mainstream even IN the sixites. Great playing but let's leave out the dancers. My favorite song is New Potato Caboose on Anthem Of The Sun. Sure enough, they played that album on the second set. Unfortunately, I was so teary eyed in actually witnessing my favorite song performed live seeing as that the last time Phil and Bobby played it together was June 8, 1969, that by the time it was over, I completely forgot how it went. I remember thinking "well, that ended kind of quickly." Listening to it again, five months later, I still think it's kind of quick but I also think it's an awesome performance. The fact that Bobby could make it all the way through Born Cross-Eyed, which hasn't been performed since 1968, and not forget any of the lyrics, which he is known to do, blew my mind. I thought they could have jammed out a little more on Alligator instead of going directly into Caution after the verses but at least we had a fantastic Other One and Viola Lee Blues. My only little beef is Phil turns himself in the mix. I remember that from seeing him at a shows, and you can hear it here.
